It's a Heart Problem

It’s a Heart Problem

Jeremiah 17:9

Focusing on issues rather than the heart is to deceive yourself: it is to fail to love God and to love your neighbor.

Racism, Left and Right politics, Abortion; There are so many issues to get passionate about.

We stress about Black Lives Matter, White Privilege, Looting, Injustice, Police brutality, failure to support the Police. We stress about the lack of respect for authority, about the lack of respect for individual lives. And we stress because we don’t respect contrary opinions of the people we disagree with.

AND WE BLAME THOSE WHO DISAGREE WITH US FOR our anxiety, for our poor behavior, and for our failure to love everyone.

AND THAT WOULD BE VERY WRONG.

My failure to love, my fear, my anxiety is on me. It is a heart problem on my part.

Jeremiah 17:9 says, “the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it.”

Some have argued with me that since they are saved, born-again, and have a new heart, this verse no longer applies to them.

That is a half-truth. When they walk in the flesh and not in the spirit (Galatians 6:16-25), they have a deceitful heart. One of the biggest deceits is that they aren’t deceived. When this describes any believer, the evidence is seen in divisions and strife as described in Galatians 5:17-25, they have a deceitful heart. One of the biggest deceits is that they think that they aren’t deceived.

When this describes any believer, the evidence is seen in divisions and strife as described in Galatians 5:19-21. Yet so often it is excused because they are “right” in their position on the issue. That is, they are right on the outside, but not in their heart. (on the inside)

Born again people, those with a new heart, have a choice of walking in the flesh or in the Spirit. That is why Paul says in Galatians 5:16, “choose” or “walk in the spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

So, in conclusion, my response to the issues of the world, whether it be racism, politics, or relationships is never anyone else’s fault. It is mine. It is a heart problem, AND I need to get my heart right with God and it will be seen in the fruit of the Spirit flowing out of me.

Galatians 4:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance…”

A right heart does not manifest itself in arguing and seeking to make people see that you are right. (this was a major problem for me when I was in my 20’s.)

All of the answers to the world’s problems are found in a heart that is right with God. That is,  the answers are found in a heart that trust God.
