Unity is Not Agreement

On church unity:   Just recently we had a vote at church that was pretty divided.  It was only about 60 % approved.  I was very pleased with the unity displayed.  That may sound strange, but it is not because unity is not agreement.  It is a willingness to work together in God given disagreement.  There could have been no unity if people had not been listening to the Lord.  It is also possible that the majority were the ones not listening to the Lord; but I do not think that is the case because there was no lording it over those who were in the minority.  It would be good to remind ourselves often that unity in the Lord is not always agreeing with each other.  When Paul admonished Euodias and Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord he was not being so foolish as to think they would agree on the issues.  He was referring back to Philippians 2:5, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”  It is the mind of humility before God and others, letting others win, letting others have what they wanted for the sake of the glory of God. (verse 11).
